The movie follows his life as he deals with the constraints of poverty and betrayal in his adopted country of Singapore.It is set in a fictional community known as Pearl. It centers around Mr. Chow, who lives in an apartment building where he and his girlfriend, Lam (Yee Soon Yee), enjoy long dinner conversations after their nightly walks to visit the grocery store together. She works part-time at a shop nearby and Chow spends most of his time studying, taking part in various community activities, and trying to make ends meet.One night while at his friend's house, Chow receives a mysterious phone call from a man posing as a reporter. After he hangs up, Lam notices that the caller's number has been rearranged. The next day, the girl's uncle informs her that there has been a break-in at the apartment building. She rushes home, but the police discover her apartment empty.After word gets out about the break-in, strange men arrive at the apartment, and Chow takes Lam to another apartment to hide until they leave. On the way to the new place, Lam and Chow notice several men carrying Chinese flags walking toward them. They finally meet the men and one of them pulls out a gun, pointing it at Chow's head. As the others rush the group away, Chow shouts, 'Shoot me now!'At the Pearl social center, Chow meets with the elders, to discuss what to do about his situation. One of the elders tells him that since he doesn't speak any English, he will need help moving things and getting inside the complex. Chow is then approached by a well-dressed man, who informs him that he needs to leave the Pearl community, since they won't be able to pay for the services he needs. He insists that Chow does not need to explain anything further to the people he has brought with him.Chow sees the Pearl elders pick up the cas hmere coat and hand it over to an elderly man who tells Chow that he doesn't need it anymore. In a move of desperation, Chow begs for the same services that the younger man was selling. After they both leave, Chow realizes that they had planned the whole thing.The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao ends as a typical film: Chow gets fired from his job, and a chance encounter with a beautiful young woman leaves him in love. His life will be full of trials, and he'll have to trust someone he barely knows. The movie ends with a dramatic music.The Original Film Version is a well-made, visually appealing film. There are some moments that are a little heavy on the dialogue, but overall it is a well made film.
